12th NIGHT

Last March 8,2013, the MSU-IIT ABEO performed a stage play which is entitled Twelfth Night. It was a modified story from Shakespeare’s original masterpiece though. The play landed on a very distorted love triangle that all began from a shipwreck.

Though the lines of the actors made me OH SO NOSEBLEED (they were in English), thanks God, I was still able to follow what was going on. Viola’s disguise as her brother which turned out to an unusual LOVE triangle was perfect because it’s the very factor that made me stay on watching. Perhaps, I’m  just a stick-in-the-mud fan of love stories that’s why I showed much interest J. It’s not the love story alone that captivated me anyway. The fighting scenes like that of Viola’s uncle and Malvolio’s “yellow stockings” part also captured me. I found it a bit funny J..Additionally, I loved the ambiance and it made me feel comfortable in my seat. The stage effects were pleasing to my senses. The sing and dance finale was also awesome.
My deep appreciation would not be completely brought out unless I will have the opportunity to dispatch everything I witnessed, from beginning up to the finale. Hence, let me just state it this way:“Everything that happened in the mini theatre was a total opposite to what I expected. I never anticipated that I would feel any aesthetic pleasure upon watching but I did. I loved the way I was hooked up by the shifting of scenes. Clarity of events?  Yes, there was, I must say. Perhaps, comprehension partly hindered the great engrossment because there were parts wherein my WHAT’s, WHY’s, and HOW’s arose. However, in totality, I appreciated it a whole LOT. The actors were students like me and I should be posing considerations as far as lapses were concerned. Thinking of 50 pesos to be in disaster is utterly disastrous. What I’m trying to say is that it all worth it, my money and time.”

Tatlo sa Isa,Great Convergence: A Twist in my Story

The MSU-IIT IPAG( Integrated Performing Arts Guild) produced a very substantial event, a cultural show which they named “Tatlo sa Isa” in line with the Mindanao Week of Peace and in resemblance with the different tribes/culture originating in the aforementioned island. From here, a very crucial engagement of mine sprouted that night of November 30,2012. This is how it all went through.
Being obliged to watch the cultural show for a reaction paper purpose, I paved the way to the MSU-IIT gymnasium that Friday night though it’s contradictory to my will. Cultural shows? They’re kind of boring. They’re stuffs I could barely relate with. But, it’s a required thing so I must go with the flow no matter what. Overpowered by my opposing will, no wonder, I came to the gym late and tried to locate the perfect place to sit on while all the screams of the audience came perturbing my head, which was still unconscious of what’s going on. Right there, from where I sat, I caught the perfect view towards the stage. With my naked and surprised eyes, I witnessed the performers of IPAG, wrapped with colorful costumes and adornments, performing a dance number. The instruments used also caught my attention because those were native instruments like improvised drums and agong which were beaten perfectly by the instrumentalists.  It was very evident  that the performers of IPAG are very skillful artists and most likely international artists in a very high-class performance. From body gestures to facial expressions and from simple to complex stunts, they brought it out to the spectators flawlessly with no noticeable lapses.  It was like “ perfect flexibility + perfect gracefulness = incredible performance”.  By that, I was starting to enjoy the show with their hard-to-reach skills engrossing me so much.
As the show progressed, with IPAG at the peak of their greatness, I was slightly interrupted about the whole “watching” thing. The show was named “Tatlo sa Isa”and I actually expected that there would just be 3 presentations, be it a dance, song or drama but what happened was there’s a series of dance numbers depicted from the different kinds of people (distinguished through their costumes). My doubts were all washed out when I finally conceived the essence of the show. This is now the idea behind it: Tatlo Sa Isa, because it’s a GREAT convergence of the three kinds of people in Mindanao: Moros, Lumads and Christian settlers. For me, it was not just convergence alone but  it’s more on unification of the people in different culture and tradition which defines “PEACE”.  That made me explicitly proud of the directors and all the persons involved in their production for such a unique arrangement .

Consequently, for a moment, I became sentimental. I was preoccupied with the beauty of the past where the origin of my identity lies. “What was Mindanao many years ago?, I asked myself”. Then,  I felt regretful of how the diversity of the Philippine culture and tradition transcends over time that I became so unaware and even not giving importance to the unaltered one. This diversity of culture, it’s not completely a destruction though because it has also been beneficial to some extent, became the main reason that most Filipinos already neglected and took for granted the core of its existence. I know that I’m already part of the modernized Philippines embracing partly a Hollywood lifestyle. Yet, I felt insecure with that simple and productive lifestyle of the past which I once tried to underestimate.
The whole idea I presented defines the “TWIST” I was mentioning at the commencement of this essay which basically constitutes to the distortion of my previous views. Twist of my story, because through my engagement/experience of  watching such a wonderful show, I came to the idea of treating  the minorities (people in different tribes) with respect and even pride because they remain firm to withstand their culture over the presence of surrounding influences. Perhaps, they altered their tradition a bit, but not as severe of discarding everything.
Past defines our identity and not knowing ‘bout it  is the greatest mistake one could ever commit. Thus, I got to learn from my past, connect it with the present and perhaps I could see more trifling things that are absolutely of great importance.  I therefore salute the IPAG for letting me realize what I’ve MISSED. Two thumbs up! J

Impact of Media #8

Media have gripped authority over my whole existence since the day I was engaged to them. It’s undeniable that media (from television and computers down to printed materials) play great roles (from communications down to entertainment) that make them so significant in my life. It’s just that they supply me absolute satisfaction, I must say, that my world is painted blue in their absence. With media inhabiting within my sight and hearing, certain things/acts (important or not) from their influence are suddenly confined within my personality. What are these influences?
As a teenager, I’m accustomed to indulge with the things that the modern world offer. These mainly involve a choice of fad and fashion that build “madness” within me. Media as well the persons involved in their productions have been consistently the grounds of the disclosure of the various crazes that pervade my young heart. The way I dress, fix my hair, and carry myself are partly influenced by the personalities shown in the media. My choice of shampoo, toothpaste, cologne, soap are also influenced by the commercials displayed in the media. My selection of songs and even dance steps (GANGNAM STYLE)are mainly depending on the new trends propagated of course by the media. These only comprise a small fraction of the things I brought to life influenced by the media. I’m most likely hooked up with WHAT IS NEW. In terms of entertainment, well, I’m more interested with the movies and telenovelas performed by my idolized artists rather than the computer games that others are addicted with. Watching these stuffs is my favorite past time(most esp. LOVE STORIES). Honestly speaking, it’s proven and tested that after getting much captivated by such, there’s a big possibility of emulating what has been seen. That is, whenever I watch love stories I also desire of having exactly a prince charming with the same features with that of the story because I feel that unusual SPARK that electrifies my heart (BOOM!). Perhaps, media are also the reason why many teenagers engaged to early relationships.
Media really put different colors to my life. However, though they are of great import, they also feed the formation of bad upshots within my temperament. A basic example for this is : I sometimes go beyond boundaries and I’m stuck with a large number of wants aside from my needs because my thinking is pervaded by the media. . Somewhat, madness is in control of my everything. This doesn’t just affect me but also the people around. Thus, it’s reasonable for me to say that the information we get from the media should undergo a scrutiny whether it’s for good or bad before undesirable changes in our lives would occur that we’ll regret in the end.

Iligan: Land of Flowing Wonders

“Having reached Iligan City is something I could consider a milestone in my life.”
I am a living testimony of Iligan’s all-encompassing bounty and splendor. When I first set foot in this place, I thought this is no different from other overpopulated cities where you could grasp nothing but dusts in the wind. But, when I started to peruse its very soul , I was being attacked with a typhoon of good things to say about ILIGAN CITY through the magnificent natural flowing wonders that welcomed me.
                                  source:http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/180535_198967960116723_4222906_n.jpg

Few kilometers away from the city proper, I ventured the pavements towards the location of Maria Cristina Falls, situated  within the boundaries of Barangay Buru-un, Ditucalan and Maria Cristina, Iligan City. This falls is considered as “Twin Falls” because the flow of water is being split into two with a large rock that comprises its uniqueness. Seeing it for the very first time really moved my everything and stunned me completely. I couldn’t help my tongue from uttering “WOW!”  This 98-meter high waterfalls is also the source of hydroelectric power that is consumed in many parts of Mindanao.

My next encounter of Iligan’s exquisiteness was facing 90-meter high Tinago Falls with its verdant surroundings that captivated my innocent heart. Through a 100-peso ride from Buruun, I was able to arrive in such  place with a scenery that I never expected to be existing. The sounds of the water that falls breaks the solemnity of the place yet contributes to the great ambiance that everyone would love to dwell with.

But oops, these are not the only waterfalls this city has. As far as I know there are more or less 23 CAPTIVATING waterfalls that surround the entire city.

Break the BLASPHEMOUS Curse! #7

Heart-stopping.  Petrifying. Spine-tingling to the MAX! It really gave me a nervous breakdown. What I am pertaining to  is the very trending Filipino horror suspense film- “The Healing” directed by Chito S. Ronio, starring Vilma Santos as “Seth” and Kim Chiu as “Cookie” together with the supporting actresses and actors. It is not a typical Filipino horror movie because the twists are innovative and unexpected. To encapsulate the succession of the dreadful scenes, let me state it this way: It was all about a blasphemous curse caused by the forbidden revival of life from the shadows of death ( Daryo’s life) which was through the mighty hands of the faith healer Manang Elsa. Everyone who went through the healing process after the case of Daryo was doomed to death and their spirits will come to merge in Daryo’s body for his lasting survival. Seth, on the other hand, was the key of the curse for she was the one who urged Manang Elsa to treat her severely ailing friends.
Yes, everyone who underwent the healing process got cured including Cookie who had a glomerulonephritis but here’s the consequence. As what the curse dictates, DEATH WILL FETCH THEM! How? Let’s us land on a very bloody and brutal scenes. Human apparitions, DOPPELGANGERS, came crashing their lives. You know the feeling of getting much staggered for in an instant, a suicidal doppelganger ,right after the surprising entrance of crows, would gonna wander towards the particular person, possess his body and turn him violent and outrageous, killing everyone he encounters remorselessly with an axe or a cleaver in his hand  and subsequently commit suicide. The scenes really made my blood boil not with anger but extreme fear. It made my eyes shed a tear of terror. In that dark place where I found myself watching the movie, with a very wide screen and very cool ambiance, I sometimes even turn my back, cover my eyes with my shaking hands and scream so loud, VERY LOUD. Imagine the intestines and the head that went rolling far from the body. Here’s more, the very stretchable tongue of the doppelganger, its sarcastic smile, its circular eyes with its circularly moving iris, its partly zombified moves and its overpowering force.
The best part of it that really made my heart skip a beat and made my voice out of my throat, is when they thought the curse was over after Seth’s triumph over the doppelganger of Cookie. But, another doppelganger came to exist unexpectedly. OH MY GOSH!!! Cookie tried to escape from it for the second time but she was uncontrollably possessed. In Seth’s house, the GREAT ENCOUNTER happened. Doppelganger now is going to kill Seth who has not recovered yet from her fractured bones due to their previous encounter. Thanks God! Seth’s son, Jed, comes to rescue. While the intensity gets higher with all their joint forces for victory, the doppelganger touches Jed’s head, trying to manipulate it and whoah!!! JED’s DOPPELGANGER is here for back-up... WHAT THE!!! It’s getting irresistible... Well, cast of all your worries for it was not a worst ending. The blasphemous curse was BROKEN! How? KILL THE ONE WHO IS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD. Indeed, Daryo was killed. Demons all went gone by the wind together with the infuriating DOPPELGANGERS!!!
It’s really an outstanding horror film that would gonna immobilize you for some time.
Look to the right. Look to the left. You never know…your DOPPELGANGER is right next to you. SCREAM!!!

Ming Ming: Overview #5

The live drama performed by the IPAG which is entitled after the name of the main character “Ming Ming”, and directed by Steven Patrick C. Fernandez  is a story of a teenager who remained innocent with the concealed realities behind her identity all throughout her life and was once forbidden with freedom until the last minute of her life.

The theme of the drama was mainly of a Muslim society. It focused mainly on the Muslim culture specifically the “Maratabat” or pride.   At first, it was very hard to comprehend. The characters performed in a way of shifting continuously and quickly from one scene to another without a certain clarity to every idea portrayed, thus created the confusion. After a long process of perceiving, as the play went on, uncertainties were cleared out with the fact that it’s comprised of three generations.  “R” was the grandmother or Ina who stood for the first generation. She was one of the Muslim women who was engaged in an arranged marriage at her young age with a man that she really didn’t love at all. The worst thing was, the man that she truly loved, the one she offered her heart was certainly her husband’s brother. She chose to surrender everything for the sake of her family because any refusal appears to be demoting their own culture arousing their Maratabat and so she was strongly forced to agree for their image to be preserved, remaining untainted. On the other hand, “P”(Ming Ming’s uncle), the man mentioned above, although the reality caused him too much to suffer, yet again in the of the family he gave up everything he held, his secret affection for R was doomed to be forgotten. Perhaps, such situation annoys us in the first place because we’re not numb of how difficult it is, self-sacrificing for others being deprived of pure happiness which is similarly giving away your soul for pride’s sake or even for others benefit. However, it revealed how genuine our Muslim brothers are when their culture and religion are concerned. They live their lives raising up their culture no matter what, taking all the odds.
The next generation was represented by “ I “, R’s daughter ( Ming Ming’s mother) who was kind of rebellious. She was again to marry somebody that her heart never yearned, the sultan’s son who had absolutely disgusting features. But, I insisted her freedom and fled into the city with the hatred of being committed to the Sultan’s son. Her main alibi was she wanted to finish her studies and was then allowed to set foot for college. There, she found her once joyful fate which gradually turned out into a grief-stricken one. She fell in love with her Economics Professor and later on got pregnant. Perhaps, she never regretted anything because their love for each other was overflowing.  Yet, her family could not accept her fate and they were preoccupied of what the Sultan’s son would have in mind if he’ll know that his fiancĂ©e was a disgrasyada and so with the other people. And again, for honor’s sake, the identity inside her womb remained undisclosed and the Sultan’s son owned Ming Ming as truly his.. This part of the drama portrays the great variance in terms of the attitude towards the same situation between the R and I generation. The seditious character of I basically shows that there was a particular change in manner which we could conclude as influenced by the time she belonged that’s kind of modernized, she was even bound with a colonial mentality. Unlike her mother who was very easy-going with the demands of their family, she tried craving for independence and freedom just that she was not totally successful and still got married with the one she refused to many times.
Now here comes the hidden identity, Ming Ming. She was once the baby inside I’s womb and was said to be following the footsteps of her mother. “Kung ano ang puno, siya rin ang prutas.” – these were exactly the words of her grandmother(R) directing to her personality. Indeed, she inherited the rebellious character of her mother. But now, it’s getting worse! She indulged to the different precarious vices in her generation.  This made her being locked up in a room where darkness dominated, in a room where she had to suffer and pay for all her misdeeds. Here, we could compare and contrast the past generation and our present generation. Shall we say, our present generation were much more distorted when it comes to attributes towards life be it the widely-spread vices which basically lead us to nowhere but darkness that built  up the great change. Perhaps others didn’t notice it but it did give a lesson most especially to us teenagers who commonly got lost in the right track, something that we could ponder on ourselves for an effective realization. Back to the story, Ming Ming now got hopeless as if nobody really cared. Just like a cat, she was in a very limited world of darkness, waiting for somebody to give her food which was her only hope for survival and after all, back to the darkness where she dwelt with herself alone. The heavy punishment, her seemingly endless sufferings made her came to a point of giving up. The last moment she had with her life was when she held the bottle of valium. She drank it , took her last breath then went asleep forever.
The drama really had the power to engross the spectators. It satisfied our expectations. It gives a lot of lessons such as knowing better the structure of Muslim traditions, etc.  The best part of it, the most impressive thing is the director’s unusual way of depicting the story. Everything went on a flashback. Ming ming was already dead when the story was told. She was then a ghost when the darkest secrets behind her identity were unleashed. Imagine, FOUR CHARACTERS IN THREE GENERATIONS. Isn’t that amazing? Here’s more, that’s why the names of the supporting characters are R,I and P because if we piece them altogether, this would result to RIP Ming Ming. Ming Ming, a spirit!!! The twists were really awesome and 100 pesos is worth paying for. That’s truly an outstanding piece which calls for a toss of victory.

He Makes a Way #4

There came a time when I was so hopeless and stressed with the burden of college life  that I  even tend to give up. I thought it’s easy but it’s not. I failed our quiz in MATH 17 and it left a big scar that weakened my determination. I studied very hard for the prelim exam in the same subject and even got a sleepless night so that I could regain the loss but after taking it, I was  left with no assurance of passing. I was so discouraged with myself and my vision of tomorrow got dimmer. I had nowhere to go but just sit on a corner, self-pitying.  I was always thinking of my mom. I wanted to hug her and tell her that “I can’t do this anymore”. She texted me and encouraged me that it’s not yet the end of the game and she believed that I could make it to success. Yet, it was not enough for me to bring back my confidence and fortitude towards the attainment of victory. All I knew is that away from them, I couldn’t store much strength to surpass all adversities. I wanted to go home and seek for a refuge.  Indeed, I was preoccupied with such matter and filled with inferiority.
On a Sunday, I went to church and attended a mass to lessen the harshness and heaviness I felt inside. I was in dire need of God’s guidance, comfort, protection and forgiveness for all my transgressions. During the mass, the psalmist sang this line “ The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want” as well as the succeeding verses which made me realized that I am not alone and there’s Somebody who cares for me and stays beside me day and night in my entire life, Somebody that I sometimes forget. Unexpectedly, my eyes went teary  as everybody sang the “Amahan Namo”. I could feel His presence that somehow gave me the reason to hold on. Moreover, I had felt His comfort when I knelt, closed my eyes and started communicating with Him through my personal prayers at the same time uncontrollably shed tears all over my face. As those tears came out, I felt like the burden within even got lighter. My heart was uplifted and my mind was enlightened giving me the courage to get over my weaknesses. My determination was revived.

After receiving the Holy Eucharist, the choir rendered a series of songs that touched my emotions. One of the songs that inspired me the most was “God will Make a Way” and here it goes:
God will make a way
Where there seems to be no way
He works in ways we cannot see
He will make a way for me
He will be my guide
Hold me closely to His side
With love and strength
For each new day
He will make a way
He will make a way

The good things that happened to me during that very day did not end on that. After the mass, I met my classmate “Nicole”. She asked me “Humana ka sa assignment?” But I answered her back with a question “Naa diay tay assignment?” Then, she told me that we had an assignment in History 5 in the internet and the deadline would be the following day. I really didn’t know about it and I thanked her for the information. When I got home, I surfed the internet, and yes, indeed, we had a quiz in History 5 through EDMODO and I able to answer it with a grateful heart. If I was not able to attend the mass, I will not meet my classmate and consequently get zero in our quiz. God made a way. He is really good all the time. Thanks be to God!
